 Indian Fish Festival


INFISH – 2009

The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), organized the First Indian Fish Festival – INFISH 2009 from 11th to 13th July 2009, at People’s Plaza, Necklace Road, Hyderabad, to showcase the production and processing technologies in fisheries and to promote ornamental fisheries, domestic fish markets and fish consumption. This was a maiden attempt by the Board in organizing such a mega event.

 

Shri Sharad Pawar, Hon’ble Union Minister for Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India inaugurated the three day festival on 11 July ’09 in the august presence of Prof. K V Thomas, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution; Shri K. Pardhasaradhi, Hon’ble Minister for Animal Husbandary, Dairying and Fisheries, Andhra Pradesh; Shri Vadde Vasanth Kumar Hon’ble Minister for Rural Development, AP;  Shri M Krishna Rao Hon’ble Minister for Rural Development, Tourisum & Fisheries, State of Pondicherry; Sri K. Bapi Raju, Member of the Parliament; Sri.K. Sambasiva Rao, Member of the Parliament; Dr.PriyadarshiDash, I.A.S, Special Chief Secretary, DAHDD&F, AP; Shri.Tarun Sridhar, I.A.S., Joint Secretary(Fisheries) Government of India;  Shri Neerabh K. Prasad, I.A.S., Commissioner of Fisheries, AP; Dr.Ayyappan Deputy Director General(Fisheries), ICAR, New Delhi and Dr.P.Krishnaiah, I.A.S, Chief Executive, NFDB, facilitated the inaugural function. It was befitting the occasion that Hon’ble minister for Agriculture also laid the foundation stone of the new NFDB office complex at Rajendra Nagar, Hyderabad on this day, an hour before this function.

 

Shri Sharad Pawar, the Union Minister while speaking on the occasion mentioned that the main objective of this festival is to bring all fish farmers, fishers, aquaculture professionals, feed manufacturers, R & D institutions, traders involved in fisheries and consumers under one platform to bring awareness on the latest developments in production technologies, domestic marketing of fish and fishery products, export of ornamental fish and creating awareness among people on fish as healthy food. The Hon’ble minister and other dignitaries released the NFDB’s Souvenir, the first News Letter and the final report of the NCAP study on the present status on fish marketing and markets in India.

 

The event witnessed exhibition of fish culture technologies, processing technologies, exquisite presentation of fish and shellfish food preparations and mesmerizing display of colorful ornamental fishes. A total of 124 exhibitors participated in the festival. The exhibitors were categorized into Executive stalls, Food Courts and Ornamental stalls.

 

Technical sessions

Technical seminar was inaugurated by Dr. S. Ayyappan, Deputy Director General (Fisheries), ICAR. Renowned scientists, academicians, entrepreneurs and farmers came together between 11th and 13th July ‘09 to present and discuss on various technologies and emerging issues related to fish production and marketing. A total of 24 presentations were made by renowned personalities in the field of aquaculture and marketing.

 

Recipe Competition

Fish Recipe competition was held especially for the women to create more innovation in preparing varieties of fish dishes and to cultivate the habit of eating more fish. Total 60 partitions took part in the competition held on 12th July, 2009 at INFISH 2009 ground

 

Entertainment

A folk spectacle like Tappetagullu dance and Jalari nurityam was performed by the traditional artists hailing from the north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. The spectacle attracted and impressed unprecedented crowds who came to witness the INFISH 2009.

 

Valedictory

INFISH ‘09 festival concluded on 13th July 09. Shri K. Pardhasaradhi, Hon’ble Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Andhra Pradesh was the Chief Guest for the function. Justice A.K. Rajan, Chairman, CAA, Government. of India Chennai presided over the function. Dr.PriyadarshiDash,I.A.S, Special Chief Secretary, DAHDD&F, AP; Shri Neerabh K. Prasad, I.A.S., Commissioner of Fisheries, AP; Dr.V.V. Sugunan,ADG, ICAR, NewDelhi and Dr.P.Krishnaiah, I.A.S, Chief Executive  NFDB were guest of honour. Dr. C. Vasudevappa, Senior Executive Director, NFDB, welcomed the gathering and Shri Ram Gopal, Additional Director, State Fisheries Department of Andhra Pradesh delivered the vote of thanks. Justice A.K. Rajan, Shri K. Pardhasaradhi, and Shri Malladi Krishna Rao, Minister for Rural Development, Tourisum & Fisheries, State of Pondicherry distributed the prizes to the winners in the recipe competition and best stalls.

 

Exhibitors

Executive Exhibitors

A total of 64 stalls were established. The stalls had participation from several R&D institutions, Government of India Organizations, States Directorate of Fisheries, Universities, Feed Companies, Seed Producers, Exporters and other Aquaculture Allied Sectors. The recent advances in fish and shellfish production technology, processing technology and allied aquaculture products were exhibited.

 

Food Courts

The festival presented an opportunity for visitors to experience the different varieties of fish food and also opportunity to learn cooking methods and techniques. The totals of 28 stalls were established for Food Courts to provide wide variety of Scrumptious items of Fish and shell fish. The event had participants from difference states including Self Help Groups (SHGs).

Ornamental

A total of 32 stalls were established to display the most enchanting fishes of both fresh and marine water. Aquarists from different States displayed the under water fantasies to the visitors.

 

Live Fish and Shellfish Display

Different varieties of live fish and shellfish having commercial importance were displayed namely murrels, red tilipa mullets, milkfish, sea bass, pangassius spp, carps sps, different varieties of shrimps namely tiger prawn(P.monodon), white shrimp(L.vannamei), Scampi and crabs(Scylla serrata). Live model shrimp and fish hatchery were displayed for the public to understand the process involved in the fish and shrimp seed production.

Recipe competition  

 

Fish is an excellent source of protein, minerals and Vitamins. The fish oils are rich in omega -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that are known to lower the risk of heart disease, important for neuro development in infants and young children and several benefits to the pregnant women.

The NFDB, with an objective of underlining the importance of fish eating among the public and increase the fish consumption, organized fish recipe competition on 12 July, 2009 at People’s plaza Necklace Road, Hyderabad during the fish festival “INFISH 2009”.

Recipe Competition: The recipe competition was organized for the women to prepare the most interesting recipes without losing nutritive & medicinal values of fish. Publicity was made about the competition through print media and electronic media. The competitors were asked to choose their choice of material for their preparation at the time of registration. Fish recipe Competition was categorised into (1) Fish/ Prawn soup (2) Fish and Prawn curry (3) Fish and Prawn snacks. A total of 52 members participated in the recipe competition of which 20 members participated in curry preparations, 22 members in snacks preparations and 10 members in soup preparations.  The participants were provided with

·         Flat form  for  cooking 

·         Fish/ Prawn/ Shrimp material was provided as per to the choice of participant in the form of ready to cook.

The recipe competition was inspected and judged by a panel of experts.
